Learn more About The Company

We are a Livery Company (London’s version of a Guild) set up in the City of London by Royal Charter in 1482. Since then, the Company of Cooks, along with over 100 other City Livery Companies, has supported the City in trying to make London a better place in general, whilst improving the craft of cookery in particular.

Careful stewardship of our assets allows us to support our four key objectives: charitable donations; development of careers in cookery; initiatives to benefit the City of London; and, the fellowship of our members. Our values of tradition, honesty, mutual respect, generosity of spirit and loyalty to the Company, characterise all our dealings.

At our core

Friendship and Shared Endeavour

The pursuit of good fellowship, often accomplished through the sharing of fine food, drink and conversation, is an essential part of Company culture. It is the ‘glue’ that holds us together. We have three Livery dinners a year, celebrating our links to the City, the Armed Services and the Associated Companies, and two further events open to all Company members and their partners: the February Candlemas Service and the Company Dinner held in October.

Our place in The City of London

Like many Livery Companies we no longer own a Livery Hall. Instead we enjoy a long-held association with the Innholders Hall, where we hold the majority of our events. The Chef Director at the Innholders Hall is a member of the Cooks Company and we share the services of their Beadle.

Our spiritual home is St Botolph’s-without-Aldersgate, a Guild Church serving the local working population and where we usually celebrate Candlemas together as a Company. Our charitable association goes back several hundred years, no doubt due to its location opposite the site of the original Cooks’ Hall that was completely destroyed by fire in 1771.

Medieval beginnings

Cooks’ Company History

The Company can trace its roots back to the late 12th century, when the rapid population growth experienced by the medieval City of London prompted the proliferation of professional cooks and cookshops. From the 15th century through to the 19th century, the Company of Cooks played a key role in the regulation of cooking and the supervision of cooks within the City. However, this role gradually diminished over time and by the 20th century had all but vanished, to be replaced by the modern Livery Company we are today - still active in the catering industry but with a distinctly different focus.

The Tale of Two Masters

We are the only Livery Company to have two Masters, a custom that dates back to the grant of our first charter when the Guild was already well established as the Royal caterer. The most likely explanation is that it allowed the Sovereign and Lord Mayor to call on the Master Cook’s services at the same time. Alternative theories suggest it reflected the merging of our two founding guilds, or bizarrely, if the Master was poisoned the Second Master was there ready to take over!
